Department of English

Establishment: June 1969

 Introduction

 The Department of English was founded in 1971. In the past, the distinguished academics, administrators and scholars such as Principal Dr. L. B. Patil (Yashwantrao Chavhan Mahavidyalaya, Karmala, Dist-Solapur), Prof. R D Karande (Raje Ramrao Mahavidyalaya), Mr. B. N. Jagdhane (Block Education Officer, Sangli), Mr. M. M. Waghmode (Retd. Principal), Mr. A. A. Hulenwar (Retd. Headmasters), Prof. Chandrakant Koli, Adv. Rajendra Mhamane, Mr. Dinraj Waghmare (Journalist), Prof. Shivajirao Patil (Ratnagiri) have contributed the department in establishment of an influential tradition of excellence and noble service. The department offers innovative certificate courses i.e. Spoken English, Functional English, Business English, etc. We have a well equipped Language Laboratory. 

          Department of English offers UG Programme in English. The syllabus of the programme is framed by the affiliating University i.e. (Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The department has its own Departmental Library which consists of more than 100 grammar books, literary collections and reference books. ‘Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe English Language Laboratory’ is well-equipped with 20 computers, installed software, Internet Connectivity through LAN and Wi-Fi as well as necessary ICT tools.

          Department runs various certificate courses, value added courses and remedial courses like Basic English Grammar’, ‘Spoken English Grammar’‘Essential Soft-Skills in English’, ‘Effective Communication in English’ and ‘Remedial Coaching for SC/ST/OBC/SBC/VJNT/ST’.

          The Best Practices of the department are Words for Today and ‘Know Our Current World and Be Update’.

          The departmental expresses pride in its outstanding achievements at University Level Exams and University Merit Scholarships. In 2017, Miss Pushpanjali Nikam secured the First Rank in BA-English Programme among all affiliated colleges under Shivaji University. In 2019, Miss Chaitanya Birajadar secured the First Rank in BA-English Programme among all affiliated colleges under Shivaji University. In 2020, Miss Komal Shrirang Shitole is the recipient of the University Level Shahu Shikshan Sanstha Pandharpur’s ‘Sahityaratna Annabhau Sathe Puraskar’ for securing the FIRST Rank among SC students in BA-English Programme among all affiliated colleges under Shivaji University.

 Mission

The Mission of the Department of English is stated through various objectives as per the subject areas are as follows:

I) Language:

  1. To acquaint the students with English grammatical forms and structures
  2. To enable the students to learn conversational skills
  3. To enable the students to apply spoken and written skills
  4. To promote the students to increase their interest and knowledge about phonetic aspects of R.P. English
  5. To inculcate phonological competence among students
  6. To acquaint the students with the job opportunities in the various areas such as teaching, advertisement, hotel management, translators, BPO, tourist guides, media-live and print, administrative services, industries, sales representative, etc.

II) Literature:

  1. To foster the ability to study literature as the mirror of society
  2. To promote students to compose poems, write literary works like play, short story.
  3. To foster and promote an innovative literary temper through writing among the students
  4. To acquaint the students with the history of English literature, and movements with the salient features and cultural backgrounds through the major eras.
  5. To acquaint the students with the major writers in English through the study of their representative literary works.
  6. To promote students to understand and grasp the major literary terms, theories, concepts, aspects and elements of the literary forms of various ages.
  7. To acquaint the students with the major genres, trends and movements of English Literature
  8. To promote and develop the interest of students to write novels, dramas, poems, etc.
  9. To acquaint the students with the emergence, growth and development of English literature around the world especially during the 20th century.
  10. To inculcate among students a linking for the prescribed literary works and newly published prize-winner literary works at international level.
  11. To make the students aware of the role of literature in the formation and reformation of society.

III) Criticism:

  1. To develop among students the ability to interpret, analyze and evaluate any literary work
  2. To enable the students to appreciate and criticize the major literary forms such as poems, novels, dramas, etc.
  3. To acquaint and introduce the students with the major terms, concepts, theories and trends in literary criticism.
  4. To strengthen the skills and ability among students to analyze all forms of literary forms of expression such as poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama etc.

  3. To motivate to think imaginatively and compose the imaginative thoughts into the words.
  4. To impart fundamental language learning skills LSRW (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
  5. To introduce students to the varied tools of literary study.
  6. To empower them for better careers avenues and earn money for the successful life
  7. To inculcate in them patriotic and democratic values through language and literature. 
  8. To bring about an exhaustive development thorough the knowledge of English language and literature and development through excellence, innovation and strategic directions
  9. To bridge the gap between rural and urban sectors by bringing the students in the main flow of knowledge to form an accountable next generation
  10. To promote to seek higher education with research study
